What is it about summer that makes for a stunning concert experience?Well for one thing, the weather is gorgeous, and nowhere is this truer than in South Africa.
Provided that the thunderstorms play along, Johannesburg has deliciously balmy evenings that make for the perfect concert engagement. The recent turnout at the Vodacom in the City concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown had the people of Jozi rocking until at least midnight in an explosion of light and colour. And then of course there are the beautifully set concerts in the park at both the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens.
But when it comes to park concert settings, can anything top the glory of Kirstenbosch in Cape Town? If you’ve managed to survive a roasting at Clifton 4 the day before, then a champagne breakfast and a concert is the perfect all-senses indulgence. Or of course you can take in Cape Town Stadium, resplendent in all its seaside glory.
And what of Durbs? Durban gets a bad rap as a sleepy wannabe Cape Town that looks to Jozi for guidance and cues. But this city has grown massively in the last 20 years, and has come into its own musically. If you can stand the humidity (which I absolutely love), then the Moses Mabhida Stadium or the ICC at the Hilton are two concert venues that have the capacity to pull it off. But it’s time that Durban embraced its Rio-ness and did a huge beach thing. It certainly has the most glorious summer weather for it.
As we head deeper into summer, wherever you find yourself, there’s bound to be a summer concert just for you…
