The smash hit musical based on the music of those 4 Swedes (well, actually 3 Swedes and a half-Norwegian) returns to the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg, for a limited season run from Tuesday 24 March 2015 to Sunday 19 April 2015.
The musical had its beginnings in the early work of ABBA, when songwriters Benny Andersson and BjörnUlvaeus were writing material for the band. They performed pieces of another musical they had written at some of their concerts, and after the band bust up in the early 80s, Benny and Björn went on to write the music for the smash show Chess, which spawned the hits “One Night in Bangkok” and “I know him so well,” and turned artists Murray Head, Elaine Paige and Barbara Dixon into international stars.
By the mid-90s, the idea of taking the songs of ABBA and setting them to a story was born, and the show debuted in London in 1995. It has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals ever, turned into a movie in 2008 starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.
Benny and Björn’s infectious melodies and sing-along words make for engaging milestones along the way throughout the show, though I have always found the story of the musical somewhat contrived. Even so, with 22 ABBA songs, it’s bound to be a great night out with friends or family.
Big Concerts is bringing the show back to Jozi. Tickets range from R200 to R500 on peak days (Wednesday to Saturday evening and weekend matinees), and from R150 to R450 on off-peak days (Tuesday and Sunday evening). There are no shows on Monday.
A 10% discount applies to group bookings of 20 or more, with 20% applied to bookings of 100 or more. Pensioners enjoy a 20% discounts on off-peak days, limited to 1 ticket per person and available only at Computicket.
